Bylsma noncommittal on Crosby

The Penguins announced a few days ago that, after suffering a headache Wednesday, center Sidney Crosby would sit out games in Philadelphia Thursday and on Long Island tonight.

Implicit in that was that he likely would return for their game against Detroit Tuesday night at Consol Energy Center.

And while that might well prove to be what happens, coach Dan Bylsma was noncommittal today when asked directly if Crosby will play against the Red Wings.

“There was not ice available today for our rehabbing guys back in Pittsburgh,” he said. “They are working out, but I don’t have anticipation about anything past getting past this game and going back home and evaluating where we’re at.”

Sounding fearful of enduring another long layoff, Sidney Crosby on Thursday said he wanted to “err on the side of caution” before returning to game action after he experienced a post-practice headache this week.

“I just want to be smart with this,” said Crosby, who did not travel with the team to Philadelphia for last night’s game but whose comments appeared on the Penguins’ website. “It’s been a long road back.

“I’ve taken some good hits over the past few weeks and am happy with the way my body responded. But after discussing things with doctors, it was better to make sure I was cautious before returning to play.”

Crosby, who missed half of last season with a concussion and did not return until Nov. 21, felt a slight headache after Wednesday’s practice. That prompted the team’s decision to sit him last night and Saturday at the New York Islanders.

Team officials do not believe the headache is alarming.

One specific hit did not cause Crosby’s headache

There was not a specific hit that caused Sidney Crosby’s latest medical issue, according to Penguins coach Dan Bylsma.

And neither is it clear what will have to happen for Crosby to return to the lineup.

Nonetheless, Bylsma said Thursday, there is “no indication of a concussion at this point in time,” even though Crosby complained of a “slight headache” after participating in practice Wednesday.

When that happened, team officials decided to hold Crosby out Thursday night in Philadelphia and Saturday against the New York Islanders, even though Bylsma said a neurocognitive test yielded results identical to those produced when Crosby got clearance to resume playing after missing 61 games because of a concussion.

Crosby: I Just Want to be Smart with This

Penguins head coach Dan Bylsma said that there is no indication that Sidney Crosby has a concussion at this time and that holding him out of the lineup for the next two games is simply a precautionary step.

Crosby didn’t feel well following a physical Monday night contest against Boston and had a “slight headache” after Wednesday’s practice, so the team will sit him when they take on Philadelphia (Thursday) and NY Islanders (Saturday).

“It was not a one-time incident in the game. He took a couple hits in the game and didn’t feel 100 percent after the game, so that was an indication,” Bylsma said. “He went and saw Dr. (Michael) Collins the next day. His ImPACT test was exactly what it was when he returned to play.

Penguins coach Dan Bylsma said today that center Sidney Crosby “took a couple of hits” against Boston Monday night and “didn’t feel 100 percent after the game.”

Crosby subsequently underwent a concussion test and passed but still is being held out of the Penguins’ games in Philadelphia tonight and on Long Island on Saturday.

“Dr. (Michael) Collins said there’s no evidence of a concussion at this point in time,” Bylsma said this afternoon.

Penguins say Crosby doesn’t have concussion

Penguins star Sidney Crosby felt a slight headache following Wednesday’s practice, which prompted the team to make the decision that he would miss the next two games.

The team does not believe Crosby’s headache is alarming and the 24-year-old passed a concussion test on Tuesday.

Crosby visited Micky Collins, the clinical psychologist who heads the UPMC Sports Concussion Program, on Tuesday. The imPACT test Crosby took revealed the same data that was evident before he returned to the NHL on Nov. 21, which is encouraging sign that nothing is seriously wrong.

“Dr. Collins said there is no indication of a concussion at this point in time,” Penguins coach Dan Bylsma said following the team’s morning skating in Philadelphia.

Crosby to Miss Next Two Games

Sidney Crosby did not accompany the Pittsburgh Penguins on their road trip to Philadelphia today and will sit out the next two games as a precaution.

“Sidney took a hard hit during our game against Boston Monday night and wasn’t feeling 100 percent,” Penguins General Manager Ray Shero said. “He saw Dr. Micky Collins of UPMC today and took an ImPACT test, which showed no problems. However, we all think it’s best that he sits out the next two games as a precaution.”

Crosby has 12 points in eight games since returning from a concussion. The Penguins play at Philadelphia Thursday and at the New York Islanders Saturday.

Penguins center Sidney Crosby did not skate with his teammates today at practice at Consol Energy Center after colliding with teammate Chris Kunitz in the third period of a 3-1 loss to the Boston Bruins last night.

Crosby’s knee absorbed the brunt of the impact, and he was in visible pain while skating back the bench, but he never missed a shift.

At practice today, Crosby emerged from the locker room to speak briefly to a crowd of about 8,000 students who were attending practice.

Other players who did not practice include forwards James Neal, Arron Asham, Pascal Dupuis, Richard Park and defensemen Deryk Engelland, Kris Letang and Zbynek Michalek.
