Crosby skates with team but not symptom-free

Sidney Crosby is as baffled as anyone.

The Pittsburgh Penguins’ superstar said after skating with the team Friday he feels like he is improving but, nearly 2 1/2 months since he last played, he remains troubled daily by concussion-like symptoms.

“It doesn’t consistently get worse or better,” Crosby said. “It’s a roller-coaster. They’re not fun.”

The Penguins have said Crosby won’t play again until he is symptom-free from the concussion-related issues that have perplexed hockey’s biggest star for 14 months. Therefore, the timetable for his return remains as indefinite as ever.

Crosby’s status creates trade-deadline problem for Penguins

The NHL trade deadline is nine days away, and there are less than six weeks in the Penguins’ regular season after that.

It might be easier for general manager Ray Shero and his staff to know what moves, if any, to pursue if he had an idea whether center and captain Sidney Crosby might be back in the lineup before the playoffs.

Crosby simply cannot oblige.

He has been dealing with concussion-like symptoms perhaps related to a neck injury for more than two months and has played in just eight games dating to early January 2011. He said Friday he still has headaches but the trouble he has had with motion and balance has subsided.

He did not travel with the club for weekend afternoon games today at Philadelphia and Sunday at Buffalo, N.Y.. Continue reading »

Crosby: Balance is better

While his teammates quickly dressed for a flight to Philadelphia, Sidney Crosby remained in his practice attire Friday afternoon, sitting alone at his Southpointe locker.

The biggest question in local sports — when will Crosby return to the lineup? — remains a mystery to the Penguins’ captain, who met with the media yesterday but was unable to provide the answer that the hockey world craves.

“I feel like I’m getting better,” Crosby said. “I’m still not symptom-free. It’s pretty clear cut. There’s no gray area. Either you’re symptom-free and you can have contact, or you’re not.”

Crosby skated with the Penguins yesterday simply because ice was not available later in the day at Southpointe or Consol Energy Center. He has skated almost daily since a learning three weeks ago that a soft-tissue injury in his neck was potentially responsible for the concussion-like symptoms Crosby is dealing with.

Crosby had good and bad news to report. Continue reading »

2011-12 Pens & Pins Charity Bowling Pin Auction

The Penguins showed off their skills in the fourth annual “Pens & Pins” Charity Bowling Tournament at the Crafton-Ingram Bowling Lanes on Monday night.

The event was organized and run by the Penguins Wives Association, with all proceeds from the evening – including funds collected from an auction and baked goods – being donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Greater Pennsylvania and Southern West Virginia. This year’s tournament raised an incredible $54,000 to benefit those charities.

Fans were dispersed into teams among the lanes with Penguins players as celebrity team captains. It’s an event that goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury enjoys coming back to each year.

“It’s been great,” Fleury said. “I think it’s been a great success, plus it’s fun too. We get a chance to meet the kids and have some fun with them. “

Paul Belluomini, who has followed the Pens since 1970, assured that the fans in attendance had an absolute blast as well meeting their favorite players for a good cause. Continue reading »

Crosby skates before Pens’ matinee in Pittsburgh

The Pittsburgh Penguins didn’t have a morning skate in advance of their afternoon game against the Winnipeg Jets, but Sidney Crosby did.

Crosby and forward Arron Asham (concussion) worked out at Consol Energy Center before the Penguins played the first of back-to-back weekend home games. They take on the Tampa Bay Lightning on Sunday night.

This is becoming a familiar routine for Crosby, who hasn’t played since Dec. 5. He skates with conditioning coach Mike Kadar in advance of a Penguins practice or game as he tries to remain in shape while awaiting his return to playing status. Continue reading »

Gretzky talks respect in the game, hope for Crosby

Wayne Gretzky said Thursday from the Bellagio that he believes the respect factor from player-to-player was lost for some time, but it is returning to the game now and it’s essential that it remains.

“As much as the League is trying to police itself, and I think they do as good a job as they can do, I think it was Sidney Crosby that said it’s still up to the players to monitor themselves and understand that you can’t just hit guys in the head,” Gretzky said in a sitdown interview with NHL Studios. “If a guy has his head down, yeah you’ve got to hit him, but you can also take your foot off the pedal a touch with that respect factor. I think it’s gotten way better the protection of each and every player. And, listen, the physical aspect of our game can never be taken out. That’s what makes our game special. We need to keep that physical presence in our sport, but it can be done in a way when it’s not crossing the line.”

Gretzky said in his day that respect factor existed because players understood there was life outside of hockey. Continue reading »

He didn’t look bad on a line with Steve Sullivan and Cal O’Reilly, even though he was playing out of position.

He added a nice dimension to the No. 2 power play, as well, even though the second unit isn’t exactly his natural habitat.

But being heavily involved in the practice at the Bell Centre didn’t mean that Sidney Crosby will be in the lineup when the Penguins face Montreal tonight.

He won’t. Continue reading »

Crosby skates with teammates, status unchanged

Sidney Crosby joined his Pittsburgh Penguins teammates for a full practice Monday, but he said it has little bearing on when he may return to play and was not an indication of an improvement in his recovery from concussion-like symptoms.

The main reason Crosby joined his teammates was that his usual skating partners — injured teammates Jordan Staal and Simon Despres — have progressed far enough in their recoveries from knee injuries that they could practice with the team.

Basically, Crosby didn’t want to feel lonely.

“It’s just good to be out there,” Crosby said. “I wasn’t going to skate by myself if I didn’t have to.”

Pens Notebook: Adjusted to absences
Post details: Author: DJ on February 5th, 2012
Categories: News - post-gazette.com. Add / View Comments (0)

Injured center Sidney Crosby accompanied the Penguins on this trip and skated at the TD Garden a few hours before the game.

Of course, Crosby did not dress against the Bruins, which means he has missed 44 of the Penguins’ first 52 games,

He figures to sit out at least a few more games before getting medical clearance to rejoin the lineup.

And perhaps because he has been injured so much of the past 13-plus months, his absence isn’t an issue inside the team, according to Bylsma.

“For our team, it’s not any different than for any other player who isn’t in our lineup,” he said.

“Not having Jordan Staal right now and not having Sidney Crosby, it’s not any different, in terms of how we deal with it.

“There’s always a bit more attention for Sidney, and I think people want to hear more information about an injury that we just don’t have a lot of information about, and the progression of it.

“But we think we can be a good team with the way we play … and that happens with the guys who are on the ice, who are in that [dressing] room.”

A look inside the team, the issues and the questions

It would make sense, of course.

When a guy’s medical records from a 13-month period look like Sidney Crosby’s do, making a few adjustments might seem prudent.

Might seem, for example, like a good time to spend some more time out on the perimeter.

There’s more time and space available there, usually, and for good reason: The farther most players get from the net, the less likely they are to be seriously involved in scoring plays.

That means opponents have fewer opportunities, and less incentive, to administer the kind of hits — be they delivered by a shoulder, a stick, an elbow of a forearm — that can lead to a guy consulting specialists in disciplines he didn’t know existed a day earlier.

You know, like neurological surgeons, clinical psychologists, otoneurologists and chiropractic neurologists.
